U.S. Department of Energy

solar elevationFor its first U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, the University of California, Davis, is creating the M-Power house—a marketable, sustainable house that contributes to the well-being and dignity of migrant farm laborers. The house will demonstrate cutting-edge "smart home" technology to synchronize its demands with the needs of the electrical grid and communicate with both the resident and power provider to manage energy systems effectively. The design of the M-Power dwelling combines public and private spaces in three linear zones. Two climate-controlled living spaces are separated by an unconditioned, enclosed deck. These three zones act as climate buffers that maximize passive cooling in summer and passive heating in winter. The units act as a system of active and passive techniques of energy efficiency. The M-Power house will be a modular, reusable building constructed of prefabricated components and locally available materials.

The Solar Decathlon is an international award-winning program that challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.— U.S. Department of Energy

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Decathlon is a prestigious competition meant to encourage responsible energy use and research into sustainable design utilizing solar power.
The first Solar Decathlon was held in 2002 and has continued biennially since 2005. UC Davis was invited to participate in the 7th iteration of the Solar Decathlon competition in 2015.

Testimonial by ABS

Associated Building Supply is fantastic. We had a disastrous experience with another door & window company. We needed a reliable company to help us get our door ordered and delivered quickly so as not to delay the rest of our construction project. We found ABS through an internet search. Tim called us back within an hour of our initial contact. Four hours later we were at the show room with Lisa who is a miracle worker. Even though we were stressed out because of our tight timeline, she was able to help us take a breath and relax. Lisa really listened to our concerns and addressed them all. She is very knowledgeable; she helped us find the perfect door, with a quick delivery time. Thanks Lisa and Tim for keeping us on time with a beautiful product.
